Rats, mice, squirrels, birds and insects can cause significant contamination of loft spaces. At Kestrel Pest Management we specialise in the comprehensive clean-up of loft spaces following a pest infestation. We understand that the majority of householders are not equipped to undertake such a physically demanding and unpleasant task, so we take care of the whole clean-up process from start to finish including:
Rodents and birds contaminate loft insulation, roof timbers and stored materials with their droppings, urine and dead bodies. This contamination can be the source of harmful disease-causing pathogens such as Hantavirus, Leptospirosis (Weil’s Disease), Ornithosis, E. Coli and Salmonella. The smell caused by an infestation will permeate into the fabric of the building creating an unpleasant environment. The debris associated with infestations can cause secondary infestations of flies, mites, fleas and beetles compounding the original issue. It is also likely to put off potential buyers or tenants when they discover the loft space harbours its own ecosystem.
When our clients contact us, we have a detailed conversation regarding the nature of the issue.
This involves a site visit to evaluate the scale and logistics of the loft clearance. We will access the loft space to ascertain the following:
Strip Out: This is where the old loft insulation is removed from the loft for disposal. We bag up the old insulation for transfer to the on-site skip. We ensure that carpets and floorings are covered and any impeding furniture is moved. Any items that are contaminated, and no longer required, are also removed via skip.
Clean Up: For rodent infestations this involves using an industrial vacuum to remove droppings, nesting material and chewed debris. Larger debris is removed using a pan and brush. For bird infestations this can involve shoveling significant amounts of guano into bags for disposal.
Decontamination: This part of the process uses specialist disinfectants to neutralise pathogens that are associated with pest infestations. The disinfectants will kill viruses, bacteria, protozoa and fungi that are commonly found in infested premises. These disinfectants are applied via sprayers and specialist ULV machines (Ultra Low Volume machines generate a fine mist of insecticide that permeates every nook and cranny within the loft space).
New Insulation Installation: This is the final part of the process, where new insulation is laid into the decontaminated loft space. We use a bottom layer to insulate between the floor beams and then lay a top up layer of insulation over the top at right angles.
This depends on several variables such as: loft size, amount of contamination, amount of materials for disposal, type of replacement insulation. The best thing is to call us for an informal chat so we can discuss your issue.
Again, this depends on the size of loft and amount of contaminated material to be removed. For example, we can normally undertake a full loft clearance of a 3-bedroom semi-detached house within one day.
We cover the North of England.
No, as long as the occupants are isolated from the work area, people can remain in the house.
We use an eco-friendly glass mineral wool that is soft to the touch, has low levels of dust and low VOC’s (Volatile Organic Compounds).
We use specialist disinfectants that are specifically developed for use in areas that have been subjected to rodent and bird infestations.
