Cluster flies are flies that hibernate over winter in large congregations, hence the name cluster fly. They are typically found hibernating in loft spaces and outbuildings hence their other common name of attic fly. As the temperature drops and day length decreases these flies seek out nooks and crannies in our houses in which to hibernate, which typically includes attics and lofts. The amounts of flies that congregate can be in their tens of thousands which can cause a real issue for homes and businesses. As the temperature fluctuates throughout the Autumn months so does the activity of the cluster flies. Periods of warmer weather stimulates the flies into activity which can lead to flies entering the the living spaces of properties via spotlights, loose fitting loft hatches, water pipes etc. Our central heating systems can also stimulate fly activity

At Kestrel Pest Management we use a ULV (ultra low volume) treatment of the loft space. This involves using a specialist machine that emits a fine mist of insecticide that will travel on air currents in the loft to ensure all nooks and crannies are treated. These flies also cause an issue in Springtime when the temperature and day length increase.
