Loft Space Clean and Disinfection
Kestrel Pest Management provide a specialist loft space clean and disinfection service where loft spaces have been contaminated due to a pest infestation. This article considers some of the questions that our clients ask us regarding the loft clearance process.
Is there a health risk having a contaminated loft space?
There are a vast range of contaminants that can harbour disease causing pathogens such as rodent droppings, bird droppings, pest carcasses, urine soaked materials, nesting material etc. Therefore, accessing a contaminated loft space can pose a risk to homeowners, tenants and tradesmen. Examples of diseases that can potentially be transmitted are Hantavirus, Leptospirosis, Weil’s Disease, Tularemia and Psittacosis.

What does the loft clearance service entail?
There are four stages to the loft clearance service:
Strip out of old insulation – Before any work is undertaken we ensure that all flooring and carpets are covered with carpet protector and any impeding furniture is temporarily moved. We can then enter the loft space and get to work bagging up all the old insulation. These bags are sealed and taken directly outside to a skip for disposal.

Cleaning – We then clear away all the debris associated with a pest infestation, such as droppings, nesting material, carcasses and chewed materials. This involves the use of hand shovels, brushes and industrial vacuums. This leaves a clean empty area ready for disinfection.

Disinfection – We then carry out the disinfection of the loft space. This is done using specialist disinfectants, specially formulated to neutralise pathogens associated with pest infestations. The disinfectants are applied using both sprayers and a ULV machine. The ULV machine generates a fine mist of disinfectant that travels to all the nooks and crannies in the loft space.

Installing new insulation – The final stage is the laying of new loft insulation to the government recommended depth of 270mm. Firstly we lay a base layer of 100mm insulation between the floor beams and then we lay the top-up insulation of 170mm at right angles over the base layer.

Will there be a lot of mess caused?
The contaminated loft insulation and debris are bagged and sealed before being transported to the on-site skip for disposal. Therefore, the minimal amount of dust will be introduced to the living spaces within the property. We also ensure all flooring is protected before work commences.

How long does the loft clearance take?
This depends on the size of the property, the type and amount of contaminated insulation, ease of access and the type of flooring in the loft space. In the average sized property, the whole process is generally completed within one to two days.
